the rugby is a sport for beasts played by gentlmen, football is a sport for gentlmen played by beasts, so the Americans took the beasts by the football and put them on rugby creating the American football that is a sport for beasts played by beasts
An intelligent blonde… I never thought I’d see the day. D:
To answer your question, I think it is because the first voyage of Caucasians that left England to inhabit North America, they took all the stupid ones with them.
We call it soccer in Japan, even though it came from England. I don’t know why. But it sometimes is called “kick” ball in our own language. The Chinese call it “foot” ball in their language. The Chinese call tennis a “net” ball while the Japanese call it a “court” ball.
Because Americans are greedy N’ self-rightous. Apparently the rest of the world missed this until the late/early 1800/1900′s. It was at that point the rest of the world said, ” It’s called FOOT-BALL for a reason” And Americans said ” Quit trying to rename OUR game of soccer, DUH”
Soccer is officially called “association football,” and the word “association” is where the word “soccer” comes from. In England, it’s still called “football,” and the United States is probably the only country that calls it “soccer.” American football is based on rugby, only safer and more organized. Both AlansTips and ikvsabre make good points here

Although ‘soccer’ is rarely used in England, the word often appears in newspaper headlines, etc, simply because it is shorter than ‘football’.
In this respect, it is like the word ‘tot’, meaning ‘baby’. Absolutely no-one in England calls a baby a ‘tot’; it seems to exist only in tabloid headlines
