TDefense problems troubled the Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane since the start of the season, and will continue to do so until the end.
Raphael VaraneCOVID-19 positive COVID-19 test will force him to miss second leg against Liverpool and El Clasico on Saturday. It is the latest in a long list of setbacks for Los Blancos.
What started badly will end worse, with Zidane unable to count on three of his starting defenders in Dani Carvajal, Varane and Sergio Ramos at a defining moment in the season – with both LaLiga Santander and the Champions League stake.
An impossible mission
Ferland mendy is the only defender who has not been injured this season – the other seven have been absent on several occasions. A total of 23 injuries were divided between Carvajal, Ramos, Alvaro Odriozola, Eder Militao, Nacho, Marcelo and Varane. A total of 509 days of absence.
The situation has been so bad that Zidane has only been able to use his usual four starts – Carvajal, Ramos, Varane and Mendy – in six of their 40 games in all competitions. The last time he was able to do this was on December 23 against Grenade.
The situation has now been complicated to the point that Varane’s positive test leaves Zidane without his starting center-back team for the deciding matches against Liverpool and Barcelona. He also spent more than 80 days without his two right-backs. Three of those absent – Ramos, Carvajal and Odriozola – have exceeded 100 days off. The recent victims of Ramos and Varane characterize the chaos.
