Gary Lineker jumped in to Mason Mount’s defense in the wake of what the expert claims was a “strange” criticism of the Chelsea midfielder.
Chelsea put a foot in the semi-finals of the Champions League after ensuring a 2-0 victory over FC Porto. Porto looked dangerous throughout, but Edouard Mendy produced a number of fine saves to frustrate the Portuguese side. It was the perfect answer to reports that he was to be replaced by the Blues this summer.
The odds at the other end were in the relative short supply. However, when Porto’s defensive line was finally breached, it was Mount who had to score his first Champions League goal and give Chelsea the advantage.
The England star shot flawlessly around the edge of the box before punching a low shot on the Porto Marchesin keeper.
ascend has been a regular this season under Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel. Yet even if he now seems nailed for the England team in Euros, the player is regularly criticized.
However, Lineker has shown how much he values Mount by throwing a fierce defense of his talents.
Speaking at halftime with the score still 0-0, Lineker sent Mount’s critics a firm message.
“You always see it, don’t you on social media,” Lineker said on BT Sport.
“Social media, as we know, is full of people who know all about football.
“But the misunderstanding on the mount is strange. He’s really good isn’t he. It was brilliant. “
This assessment was endorsed by specialist Joe Cole, who insists Mount’s criticism is misplaced.
“Jorginho was poor this weekend but he’s playing that ball on the Mason Mount side where the defender can’t get, he’s got a nibble,” Cole said.
“But everything revolves around the bend. He takes him on his weak foot, he knows where he’s going, perfect. And the calm to hit him adorable through the keeper.
“This kid, for the life of me, that’s no argument.”
Glenn Hoddle also praised Mount after his goal against Porto.
Hoddle commented: “He’s a top player, a top player and it was a sensational round.
“But it was a great ball as you say, Jorginho, protected side, you are marked on one side and the pass beat him but the skill was excellent.

Mount reveals additional training at Chelsea has paid off
Mount spoke to the press after his heroic deeds, recounting BT Sport: “We knew it would be a tough game. We continued, we scored the goal in the first half and the second was a great victory.
“It’s only half the tie, there’s a second leg left.
“It is time that he [his first Champions League goal] came. I waited patiently. It was the right time for it to come. A good pass from Jorginho, I had space and I hit him.
“I’m still working on it [finishing]. I don’t think you can work on it enough. I think I can improve myself and score more goals.
“It [Ben Chilwell] showed great composure. I thought he would shoot in front of goal but he passed it in front of the keeper. He’ll buzz with it.
“After the West Brom game, we left him behind. We watched it briefly the next day and continued. We entered this game with total focus, 100% commitment that we would earn.
“The work is not done. They will fight for the next step and we will have to give our all. We will be ready.
