Exclusive – Chelsea are open to signing two forwards this summer – with both Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero, both considered at Stamford Bridge.
90 mins revealed in December that Chelsea had joined the race for Haaland, with owner Roman Abramovich loving the Norway international and ready to break the bank to make Haaland his latest superstar signing.
Signing Haaland remains Chelsea’s goal for the summer, but the idea of bringing in another new striker to play alongside the Dortmund man has also been discussed. Aguero, given his soon-to-be-free agent status, is one of the candidates under consideration.
Chelsea have met with representatives of Aguero and have gone so far as to discuss personal conditions, but with the Argentinian also sparking interest from elsewhere, the Blues are keen to consider other options.
Abramovich could end up chasing just one striker, especially given the cost of attracting primary targets like Inter’s Haaland or Romelu Lukaku, both of which are expected to cost around or more than £ 100million, but he is aware that Chelsea may need to reshape their attacking options this summer.
Olivier Giroud’s contract expires and Tammy Abraham is reluctant to extend his current contract, which has two more years to go, while Chelsea seek to cause a sensation on another new striker.
Thomas Tuchel has Timo Werner and Kai Havertz at his disposal, but neither are seen as out of control attackers, and 90 mins understands that club officials feel their push for the title has been hampered by the lack of goals from their forwards.
Signing Haaland is seen as an obvious solution to these issues, but the chance to call on Aguero, who is a proven Premier League-level superstar, is one Chelsea feel they should seriously consider.
Aguero has confirmed his intention to leave City this summer but has yet to make a decision on his future. His original plan was to put his talents to the service of Major League Soccer or his native Argentina, but the scale of interest in him from across Europe made him reassess.
Inter and AC Milan have expressed interest in Aguero, while French giants Paris Saint-Germain are enthusiastic, and it is understood that Aguero has held talks with former Atletico Madrid employers on a possible return to the Spanish capital.
But Chelsea see themselves as real contenders to sign both Haaland and Aguero this summer, with Abramovich finally keen to build the dominant frontline he sought.
