‘That’s the mentality we need’ – Berhalter calls for USMNT to emulate USWNT mindset

The head coach of the United States has highlighted the success of the women’s team as something his team must emulate.
United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) coach Gregg Berhalter has said he wants his team to emulate the mentality of the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) as they seek to match their success at the level international.
The USWNT has long been one of the most dominant teams in the game, having won four World Cups and four Olympic gold medals.
Meanwhile, the USMNT is building what many see as a golden generation, having missed the 2018 World Cup.
What did Berhalter say?
“I love the mentality of the women’s team,” he said CBS Sports. “They expect to win in every game. They have this mentality, no matter what, where they focus on winning. That’s the mentality we need to have. We are working on it.
“It takes time. We have a young group of players. If you think about the clubs they play in, Zack Steffen, Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Sergino Dest, these guys at the top level, they can’t lose a game. for their club teams, so they’re used to this mentality where they have to win every game they play. We hope that creeps into our squad as well. “
A story of success
The USWNT’s domination at the international level dates back 30 years, until the inaugural Women’s World Cup.
After winning the trophy in China, the United States has never finished worse than third in eight appearances, having won the two most recent trophies in Canada and France.
At the Olympic level, the USWNT won four of the top five gold medals offered for women’s football, although they fell short in 2016 with a fifth place finish.
They will have the chance to add to their gold medal harvest this summer in Tokyo, having already qualified for the Olympics.
The men’s team, meanwhile, begin their qualifying campaign on Thursday.
