Dean Windass said exclusively Football FanCast that he expects Georginio Wijnaldum to leave Liverpool this summer after months of speculation over his future at Anfield.
The Dutch midfielder has entered the final six months of his Merseyside deal and has been stuck in contract negotiations for several months as Wijnaldum has yet to accept Liverpool’s offer.
And with Wijnaldum’s deal set to expire this summer, solid reports suggest the ex-Newcastle man should now join Barcelona on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Who was your Liverpool man of the game against Wolves?
Wijnaldum, valued at £ 36million by Transfermarkt, has been one of the many successes of the Jurgen Klopp era, helping Liverpool to both the Champions League and the Premier League in recent seasons, notably scoring a three-way brace minutes in the incredible Reds. return against Barcelona at Anfield in 2019 in the semi-final.
But with his career with the Reds appearing to be drawing to a close, Windass admitted that if the Dutchman was going to extend his contract with Liverpool, a deal would have been made by now.
He said Football FanCast: “It has been going on for a few weeks. If he had signed, he would have signed it already, so he won’t be here. Whoever signs it has a wonderful seated midfielder. They can’t make him stay, maybe he doesn’t think Liverpool can get back to where they were.
“The Liverpool players have let the manager down this year. You go and win the title playing extremely well all season and it looks like they’ve been “well, we’ve won the league, we can go back and not win it for another 30 years”. Liverpool Football Club will want better than that, and it will be a big loss.
