It was a somewhat exciting campaign for Everton and Carlo Ancelotti.
Although the Toffees are on the verge of securing European football, they have been incredibly inconsistent.
On the board
Speaking of inconsistency, Andre Gomez is a man who has demonstrated this in abundance this season.
The Portuguese ace had a dynamic presence in the middle of the park during his first campaign at Goodison Park.
The midfielder missed class during his spell at the club and therefore they spent 22 million pounds to provide his services. Unfortunately, this term is particularly disappointing.
After returning from injury, he struggles to regain the same control he usually plays with, and is particularly weak physically.
During Everton’s 1-0 win over Arsenal, he was sent off shortly after the hour mark after only two fights. These types of performances sum up the last few months for the 27-year-old, especially against some of the best teams in the Premier League.
Gomez won just one of his 12 games against Liverpool in February and then won just three of 14 matches against Chelsea in March and Manchester City a few weeks later.
While Carlo Ancelotti’s men collapsed to a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa on Saturday night, the midfielder was again quite light, winning only two of his nine duels in defense.
As Gomez struggles to speed up Ancelotti’s midfield, the Italian manager needs to consider some investment in the summer transfer window.
Of course, the return of Abdullah Ducur will be vital once he returns in full form, but an added dose of quality in the form of Adrien Rabio would fall well.
Should Everton sign Rabiot this summer?
Yes, insert it!
Reports from Italy in March said that Ancelotti was a fan of the Juventus midfielder, but Everton have already joined the race for £ 17 million to sign him from Chelsea and Barcelona.
It won’t be a direct chase, but they could get a huge Gomez upgrade by bringing him to Merseyside this summer.
Rabiot is a defensive midfielder and would offer many physical qualities to an Everton side that lacks a sense of stability with Gomez in the starting XI.
Speaking about the Frenchman back in November, Juventus boss Andrea Pirlo said: “He is a full player, I have rarely seen someone so strong both physically and technically.”
Gianluigi Buffon is also a big fan, commenting: “He is a fantastic mix, he has the physical strength of Pogba, who is like a wardrobe, he has the personality of Vidal and potentially the dynamism of Marchisio. He is amazing, extremely strong. “
A quick look at the statistics complements their opinions. In 2020/21, Rabiot won 2.3 games per game and made 1.4 interceptions per game.
Compare this to Gomes and the differences are clear. The Everton midfielder has made only 1.4 rebounds and 0.4 interceptions on the outing. Of course, he is a different player from Rabiot, but the Juventus midfielder also knows how to come forward and pass.
It would offer extra security in the back line and add a layer of strength and power that Gomez does not have.
And in other news, Everton have to throw for the “absolutely crazy” £ 27k-p / w maestro, he has “brutal dynamism” …
