A report in Spain claims that Liverpool are fielding Mikel Oyarzabal as a potential attacking reinforcement if they miss the Champions League qualifier.
After winning the Premier League title last season, the current campaign has been a fall from grace for Liverpool. There have been several factors that have contributed to their situation. They could still reach the top four, but have long since been out of service to preserve their crown.
As things stand, they are seven points from the top four with five games still to be played. It seems unlikely that they will ever be able to break into this area.
Therefore, a number of their top players may consider their future. Such as Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah have been regularly associated with relocations to other European power plants.
Either would be hard to replace, so Liverpool have been linked with lots of big names. Kylian Mbappe and Jadon Sancho, for example, have been mentioned.
But according to Don Balon, it is unlikely that the Reds would be able to convince any of them without Champions League football on sale. Therefore, they have to think outside the box.
The Spanish outlet claims that one name on their radar is Real Sociedad edge Oyarzabal.
The 24-year-old has spent his entire professional career at La Real. However, it might soon be time for him to test himself somewhere else.
Liverpool are aware of his abilities and reportedly see him as the “next David Silva”. However, he could play in a more advanced role than the former Manchester City star, whom he currently calls a teammate.
There is apparently a belief among the Anfield hierarchy that Oyarzabal could increase his scoring production in the Premier League. He has scored an impressive 10 goals and seven assists from 29 La Liga appearances this season. He also recently scored the decisive penalty that helped La Real win the delayed final of the 2019-2020 Copa Del Rey. But Jurgen Klopp believes he could get even more out of him.
As proof that Liverpool are reportedly willing to sanction a € 50m bid. For the Spanish international. These funds have been set aside if Salah or Mane is sold and will represent an immediate reinvestment.
Oyarzabal may not be the most high-profile replacement Liverpool could find for Salah or Mane. But he has a good reputation and can fit better within their budget.
Link to Manchester United last summer, the Spaniard is clearly well thought out. He is under contract until 2024, but may be within reach of a summer move.
Liverpool warned away from the midfielder
As part of their summer rebuilding, Liverpool will put some focus on younger players that they can work with in the long run.
One such name is Aston Villa midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, who is 17 years old. There are plans at Villa Park for him to become part of their first team squad.
But Liverpool, as well as both Manchester clubs, have been linked with the teenager.
According to Daily starhowever, Villa has told Chukwuemekas suitor it they do not allow him to travel.
There is hope that he can eventually follow a similar path to England’s international Jude Bellingham. For now, however, Villa wants to keep him where he is and offer him their own path.
