Carragher laments fans ‘scoring points’ in defence of Man Utd protestors

Jamie Carragher has spoken out in defense of Manchester United fans after protesting outside and inside Old Trafford on Sunday.

Man United’s game against Liverpool was postponed on Sunday following massive fan protests.

Protesters traveled to team hotels and Old Trafford to express their anger at the Glazer family.

A few hundred supporters gathered in the stadium as they carried their protests onto the pitch and in the stands of Old Trafford.

After the postponement was announced, Carragher told Sky Sports, as quoted by BBC Sport, that he was unwilling to criticize Man United fans:

“We can only talk about what we saw,” Carragher said. “Do we want the fans to storm the stadiums on the left and center and the games to be called off?” No, we don’t.

“I’m not going to sit here and criticize Man Utd fans for being Liverpool. Two weeks ago the fans got together. There will always be idiots who get involved. I think it’s a good thing to protest that you’re not happy with what happened at the club.

“There will always be someone who goes too far – not just in a protest. It’s a night out with friends. There is always someone doing something stupid.

“We lost a football game but I almost accept that. I am sure that [trouble] will dominate the news. It happens to fans all the time. A clip goes everywhere and there are plenty of other people doing great things.

“I don’t want to see other fans scoring points against Manchester United fans. The majority of Man Utd’s supporters were peaceful. “

Roy Keane also suggested United fans ‘had had enough’ of the Glazer:

“I am disappointed that the game is over. We are all.

“United fans have had enough. They do this because they love the club. It’s not just the last few weeks and the Super League, it’s been built for years. They thought enough was enough. It’s a huge statement for the game to be called off.

“This has been the development of the last few years. The management of the club has not been good enough. When they look at the owners, they think it’s about making money. I believe United fans are doing this because they love the little one.

“People might disagree, but sometimes you have to put a marker in to get people to notice it. It will go all over the world. Hope the owners see the fans are extremely serious.

“There is more to come, this is just the start for Man Utd fans, I guarantee that.”
