Newcastle United are keen to sign Celtic center-back Kristoffer Ajer this summer.
According to Sun, the Premier League club’s scouts were in Ibrox yesterday to reign the 23-year-old defender. Ajer’s side were beaten 4-1 by the Rangers.
Apparently Steve Bruce is keen on signing the Norway international and the player is reportedly valued at around £ 8million.
Ajer is in the final year of his contract with the Scottish giants and Celtic will be forced to take advantage of him this summer unless he decides to sign a contract extension with them.
The 23-year-old has been linked with a Premier League stint before particularly at Leicester City.
Brendan Rodgers worked with the player during his time as manager at the Scottish club and the Foxes connection certainly makes sense.
SL View: Ideal long-term signing for Newcastle
It will be interesting to see if Newcastle can catch up with the 23-year-old center this summer. The reported valuation seems quite reasonable for a player of his talent and Ajer has the potential to justify the asking price of £ 8million.
Newcastle could certainly use defensive reinforcements and signing a talented young center-half should be a priority for them.
Although Ajer has endured a difficult season with Celtic, he is certainly talented and he could become a key player for the Magpies over the next few years.
The 23-year-old is young enough for a center-back and he’s yet to reach his peak. It will improve with experience and playing time.
His signing could prove to be a huge boon for the Premier League side if the Norwegian manages to realize his potential.
