Careers are made of glorious victories and cruel defeats. José Mourinho (58) is well placed to confirm this. The Portuguese technician is free after being fired from his coaching position at Tottenham and has time to take a step back on his journey. In an interview with Marca, he returned to the most painful moment of his coaching career: the elimination of Real Madrid against Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final in 2012.
“Unfortunately, it’s football. Cristiano, Kaka, Sergio Ramos … three complete football monsters, there is no doubt about it, but they are also human. That night was the only time in my coaching career that I cried after a loss. I remember well … Aitor [Karanka] and I stopped in front of my house, in the car and cried… It was very difficult because we were the best that season. We were the best team in Europe, without a doubt, we won La Liga by beating all points and goal records and we would have won this final, I have no doubt. What was most cruel to me was that in the penalty shootout we chose Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Sergio Ramos, they were absolute certainties at the penalty kick and the guys who missed are the ones who never fail, it sank me. “
