On this day in 1953, Stanley Matthew finally made it to the FA Cup.
The 38-year-old has played since 1932 and played for various clubs during World War II between 2939 and 1945. He began his career at Stoke City before moving to Blackpool in 1947 and reached the FA Cup final. in 1948 and 1951, only to lose on both occasions.
Bolton went ahead within two minutes, thanks to a goal by Nat Lofthouse. Stan Mortenson equalized for Blackpool 35 minutes before Bolton scored twice to make it 3-1.
Blackpool returned to the game, with Mortenson scoring twice to complete his hat-trick. Bill Perry then scored in the second minute of injury to win Blackpool from a cross by Matthews.
