Manchester City are set to let Nathan Ake go this summer, according to a Football Insider report.
Ake rose through the ranks at Chelsea and was on loan at Reading and Watford before moving permanently to Bournemouth for £ 20million – a club record at the time. At Vitality Stadium, he stood out, making 121 appearances in four seasons.
After the Cherries’ relegation in 2020, he moved on to Man City, signing for around £ 40million.
Things did not go as planned for the Dutchman at the Etihad stadium. Due to the form of Ruben Dias and John Stones, he has only made 11 appearances in all competitions this season. He also finds himself stuck behind Aymeric Laporte in the pecking order.
Football Insider claim the Cityzens are set to let Ake leave the club after just a year.
The defender is still only 25, and he has four years left on his current contract, so he would still win a decent prize. However, Man City is unlikely to break even with the £ 40million spent on him.
Ake has won 19 caps for the Netherlands and offers great versatility, being able to play as a center-back, left-back and midfielder. If it were to be made available this summer, there would surely be takers.
If he leaves, Man City will likely have to bring in a new center-back in the transfer window. Young Eric Garcia is also expected to leave, which would only leave them with Dias, Stones and Laporte. For a club looking to compete on all four fronts every season, that’s not enough depth.
Garcia is without a contract this summer and has been heavily touted for his return to Barcelona, where he has spent most of his youth career.
