Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was fired from his job due to racist comments

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has been fired from his role at Hertha Berlin after making a racist comment to an expert.

Lehmann played 200 times for the Gunners over a five-year period, winning the Premier League and an FA Cup.

Since his retirement, Lehmann has acted as an expert on German television, but he had also taken on an advisory role with Hertha Berlin, replacing Jurgen Klinsmann on the club’s board last year.

Now, however, Lehmann has been fired from this role after commenting on former German international Dennis Aogo.

In a WhatsApp conversation with the current Sky Sport in Germany expert, Lehmann referred to Aogo as “a symbolic black guy”.

“Is Dennis actually your Quotenschwarzer (symbolic black guy)?”, Reads the message.

Aogo reacted angrily to the comment and posted a screenshot of the message on his Instagram story with the caption “Wow, are you serious? This message was probably not intended for me. ”

Hertha Berlin has acted quickly after the comment and fired Lehmann from his role.

“Such statements are in no way representative of the values that Hertha BSC stands for,” club president Werner Gegenbauer was quoted as saying by Athletic.

“We dissociate ourselves from all forms of racism and welcome TENNOR Holding’s action.”

SL View – Hertha Berlin’s swift action a welcome sight

Hertha Berlin should be commended for their swift condemnation of Lehmann as well as for taking decisive action without hesitation.

Racism in football is something that eats away at the heart of our game and something must be done to stop all forms of it.

This has been widespread, even after the boycott on social media, with Wales’ Rabbi Matondo posting on social media about the horrific abuse he has recently received.

Aogo should also be commended for having called Lehmann out in public, given that he could have been silent and deal with it alone.

More simply needs to be done to stop racism in both football and society.
