Liverpool lifted the European Cup for the third time in its history on this day in 1981, beating Real Madrid 1-0 in Paris.
Alan Kennedy’s goal eight minutes from time was enough to give Liverpool their third European Cup title in five seasons. Nottingham Forest won the previous two European Cups, and Aston Villa lifted the trophy after 12 months in a six-year period of English dominance.
Liverpool led by Joe Fagan beat Olon Balusioura, Aberdeen, CSKA Sofia and Bayern Munich on their way to the final. Finnish Olon crushed 10-1 in the second leg at Anfield! Liverpool fans conceded another nine goals in the next three home games (four against Aberdeen and five against CSKA before the goalless draw against Bayern Munich), so they certainly got their money in the European games of that season at Anfield!
