Chelsea announced on Friday that it had renewed its contract with striker Olivier Giroud and defender Thiago Silva.
Since Giroud’s contract was originally scheduled to end this summer, he has something to do with his transfer to AC Milan, but the latest development means that Italy will have to wait another year to sign him. If he doesn’t sign it by then Hang up his boots.
As we all know, Chelsea is a club that does not like to extend the contracts of old players, but when it comes to Giroud and Silva, the situation is completely different.
In explaining why Chelsea extended the contracts of the two players, club director Marina Granovskaya told Chelsea’s website: “Olivier has always been an important part of the club’s important moments, since he was very important to us in 2018. The year’s FA Cup victory contributed to the goal of scoring 11 on the way to win the Europa League in 2019.
“He continues to score important goals and we will never forget his efforts against Atletico Madrid in winning the Champions League this season.
“There is still a lot to do. When we exercise the option to extend his contract in April, we can only make one decision.”
Regarding Silva, Granovskaya added: “When we introduced Thiago Silva last summer, we knew that we were adding a world-class player to the team. Everyone at Chelsea has demonstrated his outstanding qualities, and he has had a huge impact on us on and off the court.
“When we signed him, we said that we hope Thiago can add a new trophy to his impressive list of honors, and he did it in our success in the Champions League this weekend. We are now I hope he will continue to move forward in exactly the same way in the coming year.”
