Football’s Greatest Goals No.52 – Far Post Header

France’s Benjamin Pavard scored the greatest goals in the 2018 World Cup. It came in a seven-goal thriller against Argentina and it is that goal that features is this week’s ‘Greatest Goal’.

Pavard made his debut for the French national team the previous November, which was sixteen months after France’s defeat to Portugal at Euro 2016. He played in the first two group matches of the World Cup but was rested for the final group game against Denmark.

The right back returned for the Second Round tie against Argentina. France took the lead after thirteen minutes after Antoine Griezmann scored from the spot.
Angel Di Maria equalised four minutes before the break before Gabriel Mercado gave Argentina the lead on 48 minutes. Nine minutes later, Benjamin Pavard scored a screamer!

Blaise Matuidi set Lucas Hernandez free down the left wing with an incisive ball through the Argentine defence. Hernandez reached the ball and sent in a cross just before Gabriel Mercado slid in to tackle him.
The ball went over six players in the penalty area and Pavard came racing in and caught the ball with a blistering shot with the outside of his right foot. It flew back across goal and inside the far post, giving Franco Armani no chance in the Argentina goal.

Kylian Mbappe added two goals in the next eleven minutes to give France a 4-2 lead. Sergio Aguero scored in the 93rd minute but it was too little, too late for the South Americans.
