Watch: McTominay reveals that Smalling’s elbow nearly cost him Messi’s shirt

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay thinks Lionel Messi is the best player in the world, but he has to work to get a Barcelona shirt.

McTominay picks up against United legend Cristiano Ronaldo when asked about the best in the world, answering quickly Messi instead – and he clearly enjoyed the prospect of facing the Argentine again in 2019.

Barcelona comfortably beat United two matches in the 2018-2019 Champions League quarter-finals, winning 1-0 at Old Trafford before Messi played 3-0 at Camp Nou.

In the first leg, Messi was caught with an elbow by Chris Smalling, but he thought it was Maktominay, and refused to give the Scottish international his jersey after the match.

McTominay needed Messi’s Argentinian colleague Sergio Romero to explain the misunderstanding and set things right. “No, no, no, tell him it’s not me!” ESPN recalls, “Make sure I get this shirt because it’s in my bedroom.”
