Thiago Silva’s Chelsea life under Tuchel has been barred by a muscle injury he picked up against Tottenham at the start of February. Since then, he has struggled to make a comeback, but is touted to return soon enough to the starting eleven.
Meanwhile, Andreas Christensen has displayed exceptional football, etching himself as one of the three at the back under Tuchel. On the back of impressive performances against Manchester United & Everton, the Danish centre-back looks well-oiled in his position for the rest of the season.
Thomas Tuchel cannot wait to pair the duo up at the back, even if it prompts him to switch to a back four.
Speaking of the pair, in his pre-Leeds press conference to Chelsea TV, he said:
“They can play together for sure. I’m very sure that Christensen can play on both sides of the back three and they can also play together as centre-backs in a back four as well.”
The hefty Dane’s versatility allows him to function in various positions at the back. Something Tuchel was keen to convey:
“The position in the middle is the best for Thiago but Andreas is also on the same level and he can also play on both sides so there is no problem,” he said.
It remains to be seen whether the two can pair up effectively and consistently over time at the back. With a back three formation doing well for Tuchel, it certainly does not look like he’s going to tweak his formation further.
One thing is for certain, the two possess complementary qualities that might make them an efficient pairing.
