Thomas Tuchel will be pegged to start the crucial Atletico Madrid 2nd leg encounter without four of his main players – two midfielders, one defender and one striker.
The two midfielders to miss the Champions League tie are Mason Mount and Jorginho, both sitting out after crossing the accumulation limit for yellow cards. If Chelsea remain unbeaten and do proceed to the quarter-finals, both will enter the last 8 fresh off their heels.
Speaking to the pre-match press conference, via Chelsea TV, Tuchel said:
“We have no fresh injuries but we are are without two key players for us tomorrow in Mount and Jorginho. Especially with Mason for his offensive skills and his power to break the lines. Atletico are one of the best in Europe for not giving shooting chances away, so of course it’s a blow to miss him for a game such as this one.”
Veteran Thiago Silva has sat out all of Chelsea’s matches since going off against Tottenham earlier in February and Tammy Abraham is still feeling unfit. Tuchel maintained they will not be available for the game.
“We also need to work without Thiago Silva and Tammy Abraham for this game. They are not quite right yet,” explained Tuchel.
Tuchel added further that he will look for solutions with four key players missing:
“We are missing four key players for this game but that makes the selection a little bit easier. They are important players for us but we have a strong group and we have to adapt and find solutions to this. We will use the whole squad”
Mount, Silva, Jorginho, and Abraham’s absence will undoubtedly be felt by the Blues. But, with the depth in squad and players such as Havertz, Kovacic, Kante, Christensen, and others in the starting eleven, Chelsea are well capable of doing the damage.
