In an exclusive interview with Football FanCastRob Lee, who made 298 appearances for Charlton, was surprised to see Nigel Adkins named manager of The Valley with the news coming out largely out of the blue on Thursday.
Adkins has been out of the game since 2019 when he decided not to renew his contract at the end of the season with Hull City, with Lee admitting he was shocked that Thomas Sandgaard had not targeted a foreign manager to replace Lee Bowyer .
Nigel Adkins is he a good date for Charlton
Yes, a smart date!
No, this is a bad choice!
Lee admitted that Adkins had eluded him as a potential manager, such as the length of time he was out of the game or had been seriously linked with a job.
Speaking on Adkins’ appointment to The Valley, Lee said FFC exclusively:
“It surprised me a bit. I thought the owner might have chosen a foreign manager since he is Scandinavian.
“Of all the names that have been mentioned that I have heard, it seems like this really is the one that came out of nowhere.
“Of all the managers mentioned, I don’t remember Nigel Adkins being one of them. If I’m honest, I forgot about Nigel Adkins.
“It wasn’t one of the names where you immediately thought so, okay, that makes sense, and he has no connection to the club.
“Maybe he had a great reference or he did a great interview, I don’t know. The thing is, someone always knows someone at a club, but I hope they do well.
Lee Bowyer left the club earlier this week to take over as manager at Birmingham City after Aitor Karanka left his post at St Andrew’s.
Charlton currently sits last in the play-offs, but has played two more games than the teams around them. So Adkins has a job to do to get them back into the Championship.
