Messi praises the “special” victory in the King’s Cup with Laporta’s return to sign a new deal

Lionel Messi hailed the special achievement of leading Barcelona to another cup as President Joan Laporta supported the attacking star to sign a new deal with the club.

The 33-year-old scored twice in Saturday’s 4-0 Copa del Rey final victory over Athletic Bilbao after Antoine Griezmann and Frenkie de Jong put Barcelona ahead with two goals.

With this double, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner set the record for nine goals in 10 matches in the final of the competition, beating Athletic star Telmo Zara.

He has now scored the fourth-highest number of goals ever in the competition (56), and, meanwhile, is behind Guillermo Jurostisa (64) and Jose Samitier (69) and Zara (81).
