A prominent Spanish doctor has said he believes Eden Hazard might ‘stop playing football’ if he has another problematic ankle surgery.
The Belgian has been plagued with injuries since moving to Real Madrid in 2019, often suffering a setback upon his return from the previous blow.
The latest example in his streak of bad luck came earlier this week; Hazard made his first appearance for Los Blancos since January on Saturday after sustaining a muscle injury, before being ruled out again with a hip problem.
This is the 11th injury suffered by Hazard since joining the club less than two years ago. By comparison, he’s only dealt with nine in his seven years at Chelsea, which saw him miss a total of 21 games. At Real, he has already missed 50.
However, while this issue is expected to keep him on the sidelines for a month, the Belgium international is reportedly considering ankle surgery which has caused him problems since he broke it in his debut season at Madrid, for finally end his injury nightmare. .
There are fears that something is still wrong with Hazard’s ankle, which has forced the 30-year-old to change his running technique to something a little more awkward, and that’s why his body was not able to cope.
He currently has a plate in his ankle to try and strengthen it, but Hazard is now considering returning to the operating room to have this plate removed in an effort to regain his original racing position and hopefully put on an end to his nightmare.
However, Dr Jose Gonzalez, who works for Real rivals Atletico Madrid, has warned that a third ankle surgery could end Hazard’s career prematurely.
Speaking to Ondacero, as quoted by the Daily Mail, he said: “Hazard has to train with the team for a maximum of ten training sessions. In my experience it is difficult for him to come back to play at his level with Real Madrid this season.
“If a player comes back after a long injury without barely practicing, the most normal thing is that he gets injured again. He has anxiety, he wants to show that he is worth and wants to give 100% and he is not there for that.
“A third operation on Eden Hazard’s ankle is very risky, there could be the possibility that the player will not play football again.”
Of course, this could well be alarmist on the part of rivals Los Blancos town, and Belgium are said to be keen to end the process so that their captain is fit for the next European Championship.
