Former Newcastle United winger and Andros Townsend claim Newcastle United could turn into the biggest club in the Premier League if they grab a possession.
According to Townsend, Newcastle has an excellent stadium and a huge fanbase. They need significant investment now and it will be interesting to see if Mike Ashley can secure a takeover in the coming months.
The 29-year-old winger claims the Magpies must do their best to stay in the top flight this season.
He said (trans Chronicle): “The biggest club in the Premier League, they could be.
“If not, then even more so because they own the stadium, the stadium is huge – it’s unbelievable. They have a fanbase, the stadium is in the city center.
“Everything is set up for them to be a huge club, but unfortunately, at this point, they’re not doing it right on the field. It’s even more sad because of the quality of the club’s formation.”
“For me, if they can stay in the Premier League this year then I’m sure things will start to turn around for them in the future. But first and foremost, they have to try to stay in the Premier League this year.”
Magpies was closely tied to a Saudi consortium early in the season but the acquisition did not materialize.
Newcastle has been linked to several high-profile players as well, and it looks like Mike Ashley was ready to sell the club in the summer.
The Magpies have not been rivals in the Premier League for long and are in desperate need of a change of ownership.
Ashley has been heavily criticized for his lack of ambition and managerial appointments over the years and he believes fans are frustrated with his mismanagement of the club.
Newcastle is in a precarious position this season and they are fighting to survive in the Premier League. They are currently just one point above the relegation zone and it will be interesting to see if they can secure the safety of the Premier League in the coming weeks.
