Edwin van der Sar admits Manchester United are one of only two clubs he would consider working in a board role as he needs a ‘feeling’ for the organization.
The 50-year-old has been employed as Ajax CEO since 2016, after four years as the club’s marketing director. As a player he made 312 appearances in all competitions for the Amsterdam Giants.
The former Dutch keeper also spent two seasons with Juventus and four at Fulham. He moved to Old Trafford in 2005, ending his career after six years and 266 outings for the Red Devils.
Van Der Sar always appeared as an intelligent man during his playing days. And it seemed inevitable that he would move on to an administrative role.
He got the chance at Ajax and took it with both hands, earning applause for his work behind the scenes.
He had been approached as possible director of football at United. The Dutch admitted to being approached “Few years ago”.
But this door was closed after John Murtough and Darren fletcher were appointed earlier this year. Murtough works as United’s director of football and Fletcher has the role of technical director.
However, Executive Vice President Ed Woodward is stepping down in 2021 and Van der Sar’s name has been mentioned as a possible successor.
Only time will tell if the Northwestern Giants decide to go this route. And the former shooter confessed his connection to the club meant it was something he would consider.
“[With] work and pressure, you should have a feeling with the club, ”he said ESPN Netherlands. “I could do the things that Ronald de Boer does – he works for us at Ajax and also here for you guys. [ESPN]. He has more freedom than me, he has a good life.
“The pressure is different and I will not work in a club where I have no feelings. I could only do that for Ajax or United. I wouldn’t work for any other club. “
Van der Sar happy with Ajax role
Ajax have already won the Eredivisie title in 2020-2021 while also lifting the KNVB Cup. They have been the dominant force in Dutch football for years.
Success on the European scene has not been so easy as they have become a sales club. Van der Sar has made no secret of the fact that he likes to see the club develop players before being sold.
And he was happy to do business with United. It remains to be seen whether he is tempted by a leading role at the Theater of Dreams.
But, at present, the man with his nation’s cap 130 times is content to continue the good work in the capital.
“I’m really happy with the way we have [developed] Ajax in recent years, ”he added. “Ten years ago, we had the ambition to reach the top of Europe.
“We have achieved this. We had to work really hard, we don’t have a wealthy landlord and the government didn’t help us.
