Mixed contract fortunes for the Newcastle duo as clubs wait to strike out

Reports claim that Newcastle United defender Federico Fernandez is being monitored by at least two European clubs ahead of his expected exit this summer.

The 32-year-old drops out of the contract at the end of the season and is therefore free to speak to foreign clubs. Without naming those involved, Northern Echo suggests that there is ‘strong interest’ from the continent. The former Argentine international moved to St James’ Park from Swansea in the summer of 2019.

He wrote a two-year deal on Tyneside and extended this by a further 12 months last summer. The South American has started 20 Premier League starts for the Magpies in 2020-2021.

And with four games left, they are almost certain to trade in England’s top division next season. But it is unlikely that Fernandez will still be at the club due to owner Mike Ashley’s policy on aging players.

He does not like handing out new offers to those over 30, which means the time has come for the former Napoli stopper. It was reported back in April that the center-back was set to be offered new terms as Steve Bruce is a fan.

However, nothing has come to fruition and it looks like his days at the club are now numbered. Fernandez has had 71 top-flight tours for the men in black and white and 78 in all competitions.

He has missed many games this season due to injury, but once he is in shape, he can still do a decent job at the heart of the back fender.

Schar probably net new deal

While Fernandez seems to be leaving, right in the middle Fabian Schar has been tipped to get a new deal. Switzerland International signed a three-year contract with the Northeast outfit in 2018.

It also runs out next month, but at. 29 he only manages the cut. The former Basel-es has a clause in its contract that allows another year if all parties agree.

And reports suggest that Bruce wants to get things sorted out before heading to the delayed European Championships. Schar has only made 17 appearances this season due to injury, but returned to Arsenal on Sunday.

However, it was not a happy comeback when he was sent off in the 90th minute when the Gunners won 2-0. But he has had 73 excursions in all competitions and may well increase the number in 2021-22.
