PSG star Kylian Mbappe is set for a late fitness test on the day of their Champions League semi-final second leg against Manchester City.
The World Cup-winning French striker is in doubt for Tuesday’s meeting at the Etihad Stadium with a calf problem.
Losing one of their stars would be a big blow to Mauricio Pochettinoof the team as they attempt to reverse a 2-1 first-leg deficit to reach the final in Istanbul.
OPINION: If Man Utd v Liverpool are not safe something will change
Manager Pochettino said in his pre-match press conference: “We have to assess Kylian. Today (Monday) he will start an individual training session and see if he can be with the team.
“There is still a day left and we will see and decide if it will be available. We will make the decision tomorrow (Tuesday). “
PSG dominated the first half of the first leg at Parc des Princes but failed to make the most of their early superiority and was penalized when City hit back after the break.
Expecting another good performance from City this time around, Pochettino stressed the importance of taking any chances that arise.
The former Tottenham boss said: “We have to be prepared to suffer in parts of the game and when we have our chances we have to be clinical and aggressive.
“It’s a game, 90 minutes, and we have to finish scoring twice. We need two goals if we are to go to the final. This is the goal and we will try.
“They have an advantage, 2-1, and we have to take a risk. We have to be brave, smart, believe and show our quality on the pitch. “
Pochettino has no doubts that his players will be up to the challenge.
The Argentinian said: “The motivation in this kind of game, the Champions League semi-finals – ‘Houston we have a problem’ if we are to motivate our players.
“It will be a battle but, above all, we will be ready. Gamers love to play these types of games. Nobody wants to go out. They all want to be involved.
Pochettino was the manager of the Spurs squad, famous from behind for beating Ajax Amsterdam in the semifinals in 2019.
“It was two years ago,” he said. “There is nothing similar, the approach will be different.”
Meanwhile, PSG have learned that midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye will be suspended for the final if he passes.
The former Everton player received an automatic one-game ban – throwing him out of Tuesday’s game – after he was sent off in the first leg against City last week.
UEFA has now announced that the suspension has been extended to two matches for “serious difficult play” following a disciplinary hearing.
The European football governing body has also confirmed that PSG were fined £ 26,000 for delaying the kick-off last week.
