Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hints at new centre-back signing for Man United

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted at an important signing in the center-back department.

Despite Eric Bailly’s recent contract extension, Solskjaer could still be looking for another center-back once the summer transfer window opens.

The new defender will increase competition for the partnership in the form of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.

United have been linked with several center-backs this season, including Raphael Varane of Real Madrid and Pau Torres of Villareal, who was in top form, scoring three goals in all defense competitions this season.

Solskjaer could be in a new selection battle with the return of Phil Jones who last played against Tranmere Rovers in last season’s FA Cup in January 2020.

“Eric Bailly has just signed a new agreement, Axel [Tuanzebe] played really well when he got the chance and hopefully we get a new player to Phil Jones next season when he’s in good shape, he worked really hard to get in shape. (via Manchester Evening News)

Solskjaer recently hinted that Jones could compete with Maguire and Lindelof once he returns to top form next season.

This means United could potentially move into next season with six first-team center-backs, which would include a new center-back if the boss ultimately signs an extra man.

United’s defense has hardly changed throughout the Premier League this season, but could we be close to seeing a change in this central couple? Solskjaer hinted that we could do it.

“But we are always looking for improvement, always looking at each department and if there are players who come to challenge them or take their place, it’s great.

“This is how it has to be at Man Utd. We’re recruiting players to challenge those we already have here and if you don’t step up your progress, players will take your place.

The Red Devils have kept 13 clean sheets in the Premier League this season, with Harry Maguire playing 90 minutes in each game.

Lindelof has missed six games this Premier League season with Eric Bailly stepping in at every opportunity.
