Carragher takes aim at Souness over ‘lazy punditry’ amid Man Utd protests

Jamie Carragher has slammed his fellow experts for not backing their views with “facts” after Graeme Souness targeted Manchester United fans on Sunday.

Man United’s game against Liverpool on Sunday has been postponed due to fan protests.

In the aftermath, a lot in the game defended United fans after they expressed their anger at the Glazer family.

Speaking Sunday, quoted by MEN, Souness suggested the protests were “misdirected” as they resulted from their club’s lack of trophies:

“I think it was born out of the fact that United are not as much of the top dog as they were last week. It’s only since Fergie’s stopping that the success has stopped and I think that irritates the fans and they have become the center of their anger. I think it’s slightly misguided.

Carragher replied to Souness and co on Monday Night Football:

“I really want to get this message across. It’s not the European Super League for me, ”Carragher said. “When we had the six clubs, we talked about it a few weeks ago, the fans who really felt that more and walked the stadiums are Manchester United and Arsenal – it’s because they had a huge problem with their owners before that.

“It was the tipping point. Other supporters are very angry with their owners, but don’t necessarily want them out. I think it’s different for these two clubs, because of that.

“I think we have to get away from it (ESL). I listened a lot this morning and watched other things. I have no problem with people who have a different point of view or a different opinion of me, because what happened yesterday is nuanced. But get the facts. Please, when you go to talk about it, know what is going on.

“This talk that Manchester United fans only do this because they don’t dispute the honors… The supporters have formed another club – FC United. It lived up to that when he started.

“The green and gold campaign took place in 2010, I think, when David Beckham came back to the club. The year before, they were in the Champions League final. The following year, they were in the Champions League final. So let’s not… the lazy experts. That’s what I call it.

“If you’re talking about something and talking passionately about something – and you can have your opinion – back it up with the facts.

“It has nothing to do with Manchester United’s position in the league. Yes, there has been a decline, obviously, but this campaign has been going on for a very, very long time, since the days when Manchester United were very, very successful.

“So let’s not accuse Manchester United fans of just throwing the toys out of the pram because they’re not competing with [Manchester] City or Champions League, whatever it is. This is absolute nonsense.
