Newcastle are heading for a major transfer disaster by signing Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy this summer.
What is the story?
The Republic of Ireland international’s contract at Selhurst Park ends after the Premier League season ends, and it looks like Steve Bruce is keen to bring him to Tyneside this summer.
According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle are back on the track for the 30-year-old and are watching closely a player they have followed for several years.
Should Newcastle sign McCarthy?
Given his contract status, the Magpies could sign him for a free transfer.
The fans will be furious
While McCarthy, 30, has plenty of top-level experience in his time with Wigan, Everton and Crystal Palace (269 Premier League games to be exact), his injury and age record does not make any difference. just doesn’t make sense. move whatever.
He has a history of significant hamstring injuries and has played just over 3,000 minutes in four years of Premier League football, and it’s hard to see which Newcastle midfielder he would actually supplant or who he would. would be supposed to be an upgrade.
Add to that his £ 50,000-a-week salary at Selhurst Park, and chances are the Magpies will pay a lot of money for a sharply declining player. They would have had an aging midfielder, with injury issues and with a lot of money. Not exactly the greatest of combinations.
Indeed, speaking after a Euro 2016 qualifier against Scotland, former Manchester United midfielder and outspoken expert Eamon Dunphy criticized the Irishman for his display and character, in saying, “McCarthy is just a talking horse. Horses who are supposed to do great things on the gallops every morning but never produce them on the racetrack. This guy never produces a real performance for Ireland and he rarely produces it for Everton. It just isn’t good.
If Newcastle are to take a step forward and avoid being dragged into relegation battles year after year, signing players like McCarthy is not the answer.
Many Magpies fans have made their feelings clear about a possible move for the Irishman in the summer of 2019, when ties emerged at the time, and given that he is now even older, they would surely be just as angry now that it is signed.
Bruce is heading for a major transfer nightmare if he signs McCarthy.
