Main Chelsea midfielder who misses Real Madrid clash but defender passed fit

Midfielder Mateo Kovacic will miss Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid through injury.

That former Madrid man has failed to overcome a hoarding problem in time to take on his old team. That Blues is level 1-1 going into the return leg at Stamford Bridge after Christian Pulisic’s strike in Spain gave them an important away goal.

However, Toni Rudiger has passed to play. The German defender will have to wear a protective mask after a face injury.

It is unlikely that Thomas Tuchel will make many changes on his side for the decisive clash, as he has seen his side overplay their opponents for much of the first stage.

Tuchel supports impressive Edge

Meanwhile, Tuchel has backed up N’Golo Kante to complete his set of top-flight football as Chelsea chase Champions League glory.

Kante has lifted the Premier League with Leicester and Chelsea and the World Cup with France, but Europe’s best club crown has so far avoided him.

The 30-year-old will take on a crucial role in Chelsea’s semi-final 2nd stage with Real, with the score locked at 1-1 from the first meeting.

Blues boss Tuchel tipped Kante to drive Chelsea again on Wednesday night and paid tribute to the midfielder.

Asked to complete the set by winning the Champions League will raise Kante’s career to new heights, Tuchel said: “Where to go? Where to raise?

“The guy is a top guy and he’s the guy you need to win trophies, of course, that’s why we’re so happy he’s here.

“I fought for this player and dreamed of this player in every club I coached. And now he’s my player.

“He has won every trophy except the Champions League, hopefully he will do everything to get this trophy.

“For me, he is an example and an incredible input to any team in the world. He is key and he will be key tomorrow and I hope in the best possible way. ”
