Kylian Mbappe will start on the bench of Paris Saint-Germain before the Champions League semi-final against Manchester City on Tuesday.
Mbappe faces a race against time to be declared fit after a calf injury. He played no part in his country’s 2-1 victory over Lens over the weekend and was even filmed limping a few days before the game.
However, Mbappe was still assigned to PSG to face City. The club understood that they were making a late decision about their star husband’s fitness and it seems that they have reached a verdict.
According to a French journalist Julien Maynard, he will start on the bench, which is a serious blow to the chances of Mauricio Pochettino to make the final.
The Parisians were already facing a tough fight after losing the first match in Paris 2-1. They continued early when Marquinhos nodded at home from a corner and seemed to increase his lead for most of the first half. After the break, however, City reunited. Two errors by PSG gave goals to Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez, while Idrissa Guy was fired for a bad fight with 13 minutes left.
Pochettino has a number of options to replace Mbappe. Mauro Icardi started at the front against Lance, but Julian Draxler and Pablo Sarabia could also be lured to play alongside Angel Di Maria and Neymar – both of whom created problems for City in the first game.
Missing Gueye by stopping is another blow. The former Everton man has a devastating presence in the midfield and will probably be replaced by Danilo Pereira, who was left on the bench in the first game.
Unlike their opponents, City do not have new problems with injuries. However, it is known that Pep Guardiola makes dramatic tactical tweaks in the last stages of the Champions League, which means that the choice of his team remains a mystery.
