Ansu Fati to undergo surgery will miss the La Liga final and Euro 2020

Ansu Fati is due to undergo surgery on Thursday, which will keep him out long-term, confirms Mundo Deportivo.

Fati made his breakthrough last season after an injury crisis in Barcelona saw them without Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele. He scored his first professional goal in August 2019 in a 2-2 draw with Osasuna, just 16 years old – making him the club’s youngest goal scorer ever.

Fati has shown incredible potential over the last few years

He had an encouraging debut season at La Blaugrana, scoring eight goals in 33 appearances in all competitions. This form gave him a call to the Spanish national team, which debuted against Germany back in September.

At the start of the current campaign, Fati started an explosive start, scoring twice in the opening 20 minutes of Barcelona’s opening against Villarreal. He went on to score three more over the course of the season, including one in El Clasico.

But the teenager suffered a serious knee injury back in November and he has not returned to action since.

Mundo Deportivo have reported that Fati will undergo surgery on his injury on Thursday and he will be ruled out for at least another two months. This keeps him out of Barcelona’s remaining La Liga fixtures and probably this summer’s European Championship.

Barcelona have four games left in La Liga this season and will likely have to win all four if they want to complete a domestic double. They meet other title fighters Atletico Madrid on Saturday before ending the season against Levante, Celta Vigo and Eibar.

Messi and Griezmann have been sensational lately

Should they claim 12 points from these games, they need Real Madrid to slide up to lift the trophy.

Without Fati, it is up to Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele, Martin Braithwaite and Francisco Trincao to occupy the forward seats.

Messi and Griezmann have been in great shape lately. In 2021, the pair have scored 42 goals and recorded 14 assists among themselves in all competitions.

As for Spain, Fati will be a big miss for them. They enter Euro 2020 with a relatively weak front line compared to the rest of their team.

Moreno could be Spain’s most important man at Euro 2020

Gerard Moreno is likely to be the star man ahead of La Furia Roja, having conceded 20 La Liga goals in that period. Marco Asensio, Adama Traore, Ferran Torres, Dani Olmo, Rodrigo, Mikel Oyarzabal and Bryan Gil will all provide opportunities out there.
