Champions League: PSG’s drama: Four ‘finals’ to save their season
Posted On May 5, 2021
Aclose to being eliminated from the Champions League against Manchester City Tuesday night, Paris Saint Germain will desperately try to save his season by winning the crowns of Ligue 1 and Coupe de France.
The French giants have four ‘finals’ ahead of them: three Ligue 1 matches and the Coupe de France semi-final against Montpellier, which will take place on May 12, with the final due to take place on May 19 against one or the other Monaco. or Rumilly Vallieres.
The Ligue 1 title is a must for PSG. If they win it they won’t get many punches on the back, but if they don’t it will be a sporting disaster, especially considering their Champions League elimination.
It’s the rather humble Lille that stands PSGin the way, which is quite surprising considering the other historical teams of France, like Marseille, Lyon and Monaco.
PSG must play and hope for three victories against Rennes, Reims and Brest, while Lille must play against Lens, Saint-Etienne and Angers.
If Lille were to become champions, it would only be the fourth time in club history that they would succeed after winning it in 1946, 1954 and 2011.
Mauricio Pochettino was brought in to replace Thomas tuchel, left for Chelsea in January after disagreements with PSG sports director Leonardo.
Despite leaving the back door to PSG, Tuchel is just hours away from another Champions League final, this time with Chelsea.
Pochettino was hired to bring peace to the squad and try to qualify for another Champions League final, but Tuesday night’s setback is certainly one Pochettino will want to mend before the final matches of the season.
Mbappe was invisible
Kylian mbappe was anonymous in the first leg against Manchester City and was injured in the second leg.
The extent of his injury is not yet known, but PSG hope to be able to help them in the four “finals” which stand in front of them.
